Corrections to Previous Students' Websites

  • On Jonathan Dyal's website, it is stated that Bunyamwera virus was the first virus of the Bunyaviridae family to be discovered; however, the Rift Valley fever virus was isolated in 1931, prior to the discovery of the Bunyamwera virus in 1943. Nevertheless, the discovery of the namesake virus for this family was important to furthering the understanding of virology, particularly for bunyaviruses.

  • Additionally, on Jonathan Dyal's website, it states that Bunyaviruses are all negative sense except phleboviruses; it turns out that the sense of the genome varies between the segments (L, M, and S). Although most bunyaviruses have negative sense genomes, phlebovirus and tospovirus can have ambisense segments (see molecular biology section of this website for more details)
